  • The 39 Steps is a farcical thriller featuring espionage, romance, and physical comedy.

  • I have usually played either a villain, or an over the top comedic character. Whether it’s uproarious laughter or murmured disdain, either one is a pleasure to hear from the audience.

  • On the debut of a play where I was the main villain, there was a tense moment right before a fight between my character and the protagonist. Just before I lunged at her, I made my neck crack - but had never done that in rehearsal. The audience and the characters on stage were both stunned. The fight scene went phenomenally.

the girl

  • Chaotic, hilarious misadventures with spies, women, and so many hats!

  • I like to play characters that are over the top. Give me big hair, big emotions, accents, etc.

  • So much theater; so many memories! I will never forget performing in the musical Rock of Ages as the young German businessman Franz Klineman. I got the part because I was one of the only people who was willing to even try a German accent during auditions. My solo song for that show was Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar, where I got to rip off a tear-away suit, revealing a blue bodysuit over a muscle suit. Iconic moment. The whole thing was an absolute blast to be a part of, and I made some long-time friends during that show.

clown 1

  • Including the intermission, two and a half, maybe three hours.

  • Wonderfully delicious and juicy roles. I don’t much get into dry and tasteless bits. Comedic roles are always my favorite way to help put on a laugh.

  • The collective effort of the cast in “One flew over the cuckoo’s nest”. When greeting the audience after the show, most  came through the line with tears in their eyes or they had been crying. Just a testament to the power of the writing and the delivery from the entire cast. I’ve come to the conclusion that we(the cast) do this to ourselves, but we do it for you(the audience).

clown 2

  • Spies and two “clowns” having an identity crisis.

  • I really enjoy characters with a complicated past. A character that has depth and emotions, those are the most enjoyable for me. Basically, villains.

  • So many, but the most memorable was the time during an outdoor show a lady spread her husband’s ashes on the apron of the stage, her husband was a big fan of the act that always performed on that stage, then 30 min later, rain. It was a gooey, slippery mess for days.

Joanna mechaley

Joanna Mechaley.

director

  • Murder. Espionage. Romance. Absolute comedic mayhem. Hitchcock meets Monty Python.

  • I like characters with meat, the ones who make bad decisions or are monstrous in some way. I love exploring the less-than-desireable qualities of what makes us human, the things we keep stuffed way down deep because it’s not socially acceptable to express them. It’s weirdly satisfying to bring those things to life.

  • My first kiss. Oh, the horror. I’d been cast as “Deanie” in Splendor in the Grass and it was my first real role on stage. I was a freshman, my co-actor was a senior, and we were supposed to open the show in the middle of a serious make-out session. This would have been bad enough even if I had known what I was doing. Instead, there I was: zero romantic experience, freshly out of braces, just praying I wouldn’t stab him with my nose. Our director cut the rest of the cast loose and gave his full attention to our “passion,” hunkered down eye-level with us. “Again. Again! Joanna, relax! It doesn’t look natural.” When he was finally satisfied that I’d come along far enough to “work on it,” I was dismissed…only to discover my dad standing in the auditorium instead of waiting for me out in the car. Sooo…most memorable stage experience and most memorable ride home.
